Chotanagpur Law College, Ranchi organized a State Level Advocacy Workshop in collaboration with the National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP), Department of Health, Jharkhand. The workshop aimed to strengthen tobacco control measures and promote the implementation of Tobacco Free Educational Institutions. It took place on 22 March, 2024 at the auditorium of Chotanagpur Law College and was attended by faculty members and students.
The workshop commenced with a ceremonial lighting of the lamp, followed by a welcome address delivered by Dr. Shakshi Pathak, who outlined the objectives of the workshop. Dr. Aswini Kumar, the State Nodal Officer of the NTCP in Jharkhand, then delivered a talk on the serious health implications of tobacco consumption. Additionally, Dr. Arpita Rai, an Associate Professor from RIMS Dental College in Ranchi, provided a detailed explanation of the composition and health effects of tobacco in her presentation titled “Tobacco: Major Public Health Challenges.”
Mr. Rajiv Kumar, the State Consultant for the NTCP, shared insights on tobacco control initiatives in Jharkhand and discussed various laws related to tobacco control, including the National Tobacco Control Program, the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act 2003, and the Tobacco Free Educational Institutional Guidelines.
The workshop was efficiently coordinated by Ravish Ji from Ranchi Cancer Care and Research Centre and Dhiraj Ji from the Health Department, Government of Jharkhand. The vote of thanks was offered by Dr. Aswini Kumar, the State Nodal Officer of the NTCP in Jharkhand. The workshop concluded with motivating remarks by Prof. (Dr.) Pankaj Kumar Chaturvedi, the Dean (Law) of Ranchi University, and the Principal of Chotanagpur Law College. To demonstrate their commitment to abstaining from tobacco products, all attendees took a pledge.
Overall, the workshop successfully contributed to raising awareness about tobacco control and promoting tobacco-free educational institutions.
